It was originally written for George Bridgetower, a violin virtuoso who was visiting Vienna in the spring of Beethoven and Bridgetower got along like a house on fire and, when they booked a concert together with Beethoven playing the piano , the composer rushed to finish a violin sonata he had begun the previous year.

The pair premiered the sonata on May 24, , with very little rehearsal and to great audience acclaim. The honeymoon came to a swift end, however, when Bridgetower made an unflattering comment about a woman that Beethoven respected exactly what he said is unknown. Beethoven, who generally held grudges forever, was furious. Bridgetower was bitter for the rest of his life. That was more or less the end of the story until , when Leo Tolstoy wrote a story entitled The Kreutzer Sonata.

In Tolstoy's novella, a man describes how he and his wife became emotionally estranged and lived in constant tension. He explains:. I was in torture, especially because I was sure that toward me she had no other feeling than of perpetual irritation, sometimes interrupted by the customary sensuality, and that this man,—thanks to his external elegance and his novelty, and, above all, thanks to his unquestionably remarkable talent, thanks to the attraction exercised under the influence of music, thanks to the impression that music produces upon nervous natures,—this man would not only please, but would inevitably, and without difficulty, subjugate and conquer her, and do with her as he liked.

When he confronts Abby she denies it. This, of course, only intensifies Edgar's suspicions and it is not long before the "Kreutzer" sonata begins to drive Edgar into a terrifying state of morbid jealousy. One day, Edgar receives a call from his sister, Elinore. She'd like for him to come to San Francisco to discuss problems revolving around his handling of the family's foundation.

Upon his arrival, Elinore comments on how much he's changed mentally and physically. She encourages him to talk to someone, but the suggestion falls on deaf ears - Edgar is too wracked with thoughts of Abby and Aiden taking advantage of his absence.

An increasingly obsessed Edgar hurries back home while struggling against an uncontrollable rage. Rated R for strong graphic sexual content, nudity, language, a scene of bloody violence and brief drug use. Did you know Edit. User reviews 7 Review. Top review. This movie is a real find. Listen, I have seen 23 first votes that rank this film as a 3. And I have to say that they are plainly insane to "besmirch" this film as to the extent that they have.

What I got out of this film was an originally filmed and paced independent film that wasn't annoyingly experimental. Its voice over made the film into a good unforced narrative with acting that was equally effective.

I loved the story, I loved the acting. The feelings of jealousy, suspicion, anxiety, and suffocation were so absorbing. I felt attached to most of this film. The acting was fluid and perfect chemistry. There are so many ways to act a scene. Danny Huston and Elisabeth Rohm's performances were some of the most realistic and enjoyable I have ever seen. At times the film felt like a documentary between the characters and the hand-held style.

I felt like this was definitely one of the best films I've seen in a long time. This is a wonderful ride with a great efficacy. ThatGuyWoody Aug 5, Details Edit. Release date June 20, United Kingdom.
