Graduate programs in spanish linguistics

Lacorte or Dr. Gironzetti to discuss available opportunities. Current faculty members specialize in the following areas:. I was sought out for a project preparing analysts for work in Afghanistan and Pakistan on behalf of DIA - there I was a lead designer for all of the language learning and cultural familiarity in person and online modules.

For NSA, I was the lead researcher on a training needs assessment to ascertain the best training pipeline for new military language analysts in 5 targeted languages. I taught several different levels and implemented a Heritage Language track at the school.

I taught for 12 years before leaving the workforce when I had my youngest child. My coursework in the HAL program allowed me to appreciate the developmental steps of learning a second language, which in turn allowed me to teach more effectively.

I also learned the importance of differentiated instruction and authentic resources. I also gained a more thorough understanding of the grammar and linguistic structure of Spanish, which helped me immensely when explaining concepts to my students.

The American Association for Applied Linguistics defines applied linguistics as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that addresses a broad range of language-related issues in order to understand their roles in the lives of individuals and conditions in society. It draws on a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches from various disciplines—from the humanities to the social and natural sciences—as it develops its own knowledge-base about language, its users and uses and their underlying social and material conditions.

A full-time student typically completes the M. However, part-time students typically need more time to finish the program, depending on how many courses per semester they are taking. New graduate teaching assistants are required to participate in a week orientation session on language instruction and take a graduate course in communicative language teaching during the Fall semester of their first year of graduate studies.

FSU further offers outstanding graduate students the opportunity to apply for competitive fellowships that relieve them from teaching responsibilities for a full academic year. Advanced graduate students may have the opportunity to do research and teach at FSU's study abroad programs. This success is a direct reflection of the national visibility of our faculty and of the cutting-edge research we are pursuing.

Our faculty also play a central role in the cross-disciplinary Center for Language Science , and the increasing methodological sophistication of our experimental research, including work in eye-tracking and planned developments in neuro-imaging, provides a transformative model for Hispanic Linguistics programs.

Navin Viswanathan - My research focuses on understanding Speech Perception and Production within the general framework of Perception, Action and Cognition. Broadly, I attempt to develop techniques to study spoken language processes in ecologically typical conditions of language use. The central question of my interest is how listeners achieve stable speech perception despite a widely varying speech signal. Students may also gain valuable research experience by working closely with faculty members as research assistants.

As for study abroad, graduate students have several opportunities to collaborate with the department's summer programs in Puebla, Mexico and in Ronda, Spain. The second exam is the first draft of Chapters 2 and 3 of the dissertation.

This exam asks for more elaboration on the selected independent variable s of such future research, and comprises a review of the literature, research questions, and a research design to address the independent variable s. Chapters make up the Dissertation Proposal. The two four-day take-home exams must be a maximum of 20 pages theoretical, historical, and sociolinguistics or 30 pages Applied Linguistics in length, not including references, appendices etc.

The exams will be taken during the last month of the third semester in the Ph. The examinations are graded by the thesis director and one other professor appointed by the Chair. To pass the Ph. Students are allowed one rewrite. After successful completion of the Ph. Co-mentorship is also possible albeit exceptional. The readers may be from outside the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, either from another Georgetown department or program, or from outside Georgetown University.

Such outside readers are recommended whenever feasible. Readers from outside the University must hold a doctoral degree. They must also either be members of the faculty of another university or hold a professional appointment in a nonacademic research institution that is equivalent to the academic rank of assistant professor or above. When the student chooses the dissertation committee, he or she must file the appropriate form with the DGS.

One semester after successful completion of the two Ph. All committee members must be present, either in person, on Zoom or Skype, or on a conference call. The proposal will be more than an overview of the topic; considerable research on the subject must be evident so that rigorous discussion may take place.

For Theoretical Linguistics, the dissertation proposal comprises an Abstract, a Review of the literature, a Statement of the Problem with clearly formulated research questions, a discussion of the methodology used for data collection if relevant , and a sketch of the proposed solution.

For Applied Linguistics, the dissertation proposal comprises an Abstract, Introduction and Statement of the Problem, Review of the Literature with research questions, and a defendable Research Design and Methodology section to address the research questions. All treatment and testing materials must be included in the appendices. Upon approval of the proposal by the dissertation committee, the student will enroll in two successive semesters of Thesis Research in the last year of study, during which period the dissertation will be written.

Once a student has defended his or her dissertation proposal, the student is considered ABD. All committee members must be present, either in person, on Zoom or Skype, or on conference call at the defense for the entire session.
